CRISIS AND RESPONSE

I chose this topic to honour my grandmother, Basia Wiśniewska who passed away on 18 March 2024. Born in Piastów Poland on 1 January 1936, I want to recognise her bravery and resilience as her response to the crisis of World War II. Vivid memories of her childhood and migration to Australia are etched in her mind from a young age and had a profound impact on her life.

Basia’s Passport Photo (1959).

The four topics that best represent the crisis and response to World War II are The Nazis’ Atrocities, Living through war, the Warsaw Uprising and Migration. With an estimated 40-60 million lives lost, this crisis was more destructive than any war that took place prior. My grandmother and her family’s response were one of inspiration, risk taking and bravery.
